In the run-up to Valentine’s Day, we’re here to provide words of encouragement on dating with hearing loss so you never let your hearing challenges hold you back.
For many with hearing aids, cochlea implants and other hearing devices and impairments, it can be hard to feel confident in social situations, especially when dating with hearing loss – but ultimately, it’s the person and personality that matters the most when finding love.
We really love this story from Channel 4’s disability focused dating programme ‘The Undatables’, where university student, Thomas, is looking for love. Thomas had suffered with hearing loss from the age of 4 as a result of a rare syndrome and at 14 had cochlea implants fitted. Although being able to hear far better, the devices meant that he would often feel self-conscious of what a women might think. Further on in his story, he meets his date Jamella and it’s clear to see sparks flew – Jamella really embraced Thomas for him, his insecurity about the devices melted away, and the two really hit it off.

When socialising, it can be easy to believe that people are judging your insecurities. We encourage you to embrace your hearing loss, as shown by Thomas, who is dating With hearing loss, and relish the joys of meeting new people and your shared interests. As The Undateables has taught us, there is no such thing as being ‘undateable’ and everyone has someone out there, it’s just the case of finding them!
Never feel discouraged or held back by hearing devices when looking for love.
