How do I know if I’m experiencing hearing loss?

The first thing to understand is that hearing loss is very common. Almost all of us experience some form of difficulty with hearing over the course of our lives.

It can be experienced in a wide variety of ways. If it’s sudden, then it will probably be due to an earwax build-up, a perforation of the eardrum, or something similar. If you lose hearing suddenly, it’s important that you book a consultation with one of our audiologists as soon as possible.

A gradual loss of hearing is commonly associated with aging. Common signs could be finding it difficult to hear people in normal conversation, struggling to speak to people on the phone, or finding yourself turning up the volume on your TV or radio to a high level.

How can I improve my hearing?

Depending on the extent and cause of your hearing loss, there are loads of ways that your hearing can be improved. If the loss has been gradual, typically due to old age, consistent and unprotected exposure to loud noise, or a health condition, then hearing aids could improve your situation drastically.

All of our hearing aids are tailored to your needs and regularly checked to ensure they’re doing their job properly. To learn more about our hearing aids packages, take a look at our hearing aids page or give us a call.

If your hearing loss is due to a build-up of earwax, tinnitus, or anything similar, then there are other treatment options available for you. Take a look at our earwax removal page and tinnitus information for more guidance!

FAQ

How can I prevent hearing loss?

There are loads of ways to prevent hearing loss. A great example is to wear protective ear plugs at loud events such as concerts, cinema visits, and clubs. Reusable earplugs or musicians ear plugs are a great way to protect your hearing at events like these.

Another key thing to consider is when you’re listening to music on your personal music device. Keep the volume low and pay attention to warnings that suggest you don’t turn it up too loud.

Over time, consistently loud situations, unprotected, can cause permanent hearing loss. Always use ear protection.

Can hearing loss be temporary?

Yes. If your hearing loss is caused by a temporary illness or an earwax build-up, then your hearing will, most likely, be absolutely fine once the problem has been resolved. Unfortunately, many hearing loss problems aren’t temporary. Tinnitus and age-related hearing loss are, at this time, incurable.
